When: Sunday, May 27 at 1:00pm
Where: University of Guelph (map). Meet at BIO (on the U of G campus, west of Gordon on Grange Lane) for 1:00pm.
Details:Lichens are likely one of the most misunderstood groups of organisms, and even most biologists aren't familiar with their natural history. Join Troy McMullin for a short lesson on lichens, followed by a walk in search of the many species that live in the Guelph area. This walk will include a short tour of the new herbarium at the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario (BIO).

Event: Whatever Creeps and Crawls - The Wonderful World of Bugs With Arboretum Naturalist Intern Bryna Belisle

Where: Meet at the Riverside Park train station (just off the main parking lot - look for the little train!) (map)
Details:Join Bryna Belisle in pursuit of some of the wonderful creepy-crawlies that can be found in the Guelph area. Even in a place as urban as Riverside Park, there are tons of bugs to be found! We will have at least a few nets on hand, but a keen eye will be equally important. This will be a great program for kids of all ages, so feel free to bring the family!

Event: A River of Life - The Eramosa River Ecosystem A part of the Two Rivers Festival

When: June 16 at 2:00pm
Where: Meet at the Barber Scout Camp parking lot (on Stone Rd east of Victoria) (map).
Details:The Two Rivers Festival is a brand new, Guelph area initiative to draw attention to one of our most valuable resources - our rivers! The GFN will be participating with an event designed to show the public how much life depends on these rivers, and how important it is to conserve them. The event will include a guided walk, dip-netting for aquatic invertebrates and more! Come out and show your support! See their website (www.2riversfestival.org) for more events!

Event: Make it Count - Censusing the Agnew Property A great opportunity to engage in some citizen science!

When: Sunday, June 24 at 6:30am
Where: The property is tricky to find, so we will meet at 6:30am in The Arboretum main parking lot to carpool.
Details:On behalf of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the GFN stewards a property called the Agnew Property near Rockwood. In an effort to compile a list of breeding birds and notable plants, we are asking club members to join us in a survey of the property. The focus will be on identification, but you don't need to be an expert to join in!

Where To Go Hiking and Birding

Unsure where to go for a hike? Suggestions can be found in the GRCA Trails Take Flight brochure put together by GFN members. This brochure and its related micro-website project won the “EDCO” (Economic Developers Council of Ontario) Tourism Award. Check out this website for the Trails Take Flight details: http://www.grandrivercountry.com/trails/

Guelph Hiking Trail Club (GHTC) Hikes

GFN members are welcome to join in any hikes of the GHTC. Find out their schedule by going to www.guelphhiking.com and downloading their latest newsletter. Most of their hikes, apart from the long ‘strenuous’ ones, include time to take a look around at the natural areas you are walking through, and all hikers share a common interest in the outdoors.
